None of these programs use calendar dates, | | therefore they are not affected by the coming century date | | change. | +------------------------------------------------------------------+ BAKTRAK.EXE is a utility designed for the maintenance of Track 0 backups found on hard drives using Microhouse's EZDRIVE (MaxBlast) software. This software has the following features: · Restores corrupted partition tables (MBRs) on hard drives in systems using MaxBlast Software · Removes unneeded Track 0 backups on hard drives in systems using MaxBlast Software · Can Zero out the first 63 Sectors of selected hard drives. User's may obtain BAKTRAK.EXE via: · Download from either the Maxtor Internet Website (http://www.maxtor.com/) or FTP Site (ftp://www.maxtor.com/). · The Maxtor Utilities Diskette (version 5.0 or newer). Technicians Overview: -------------------- The following is a brief synopsis for using BAKTRAK.EXE: · Clean boot the PC with a DOS System or Windows 95/98 Startup disk. · At the A: prompt, insert the diskette containing the BAKTRAK.EXE file. Type "BAKTRAK" and press the [Enter] key. · Select the appropriate drive from the drive list and press the [Enter] key. Skip this step if the Maxtor hard drive is the only drive in the system. · Select either the "Backup/Restore Track 0" or "Wipe The Drive Clean" option and press the [Enter] key. Remove diskette when procedure is complete. OVERVIEW COMPLETE Step by Step Procedure: ---------------------- The following are step by step procedures necessary for using BAKTRAK.EXE: 1. Boot the PC with a system boot diskette. This will take the user to an A: prompt. 2. At the A: prompt, remove the system diskette and insert the diskette containing the BAKTRAK.EXE program. 3. At the A: type "BAKTRAK" and press the [Enter] key. 4. Select the specific hard drive from the drive list and press the [Enter] key. NOTE: Skip this step if the Maxtor hard drive is the only drive in the system. 5. At this point a Menu will appear on the screen. Select either "Backup/Restore Track 0" or "Wipe The Drive Clean" and press the [Enter] key. a) The following steps describe the "Backup / Restore Track 0" Highlight "Backup/ Restore Track 0" and press the [Enter] key. The next screen will list the boot tracks found if any and the maintenance options available. The boot tracks are listed from the oldest to the newest starting at the top of the screen. The following are the options available and how to use each option. 1) Press the [Insert] key to back up the current track zero - If any changes are going to take place to the prior boot tracks it is a good idea to back up the existing track zero before continuing. This will allow you to stay current with the most recent backup. 2) Press the [ - ] or [ _ ] key to highlight a boot track to restore - The up and down arrows position the highlighted section over a specific choice. 3) Press the [Del] key to delete the selected backup - After highlighting a specific backup pressing the delete key will delete that specific backup. This will be helpful in removing any backups that are no longer needed. After pressing the delete key a verification that the boot track chosen will appear. At this point press the "Y" key to delete the specific backup or press the [Esc] to cancel backup and return to the previous screen. NOTE: A current backup should be made before deleting any prior backups. 4) Press the [Enter] key to restore the selected backup - Highlighting a certain boot track and pressing the [Enter] key allows the user to select a specific prior boot track for use. After pressing the [Enter] key, a screen will appear with helpful information. PLEASE READ THIS INFORMATION BEFORE CONTINUING!!! Once read, press the "Y" key to restore the selected backup or press the [Esc] key the operation. 5) Press the [Esc] key to exit this menu - This option takes users out of the "Backup / Restore Track 0" section. b) The second option available on the main screen is "Wipe the Drive Clean". ! WARNING ! this feature is data destructive. Maxtor recommends that users backup critical information before continuing. Highlight "Wipe the Drive Clean" press the [Enter] key. A new next screen will appear with 2 options: 1) Press the "Y" key to permanently delete all data - Pressing this key will wipe out the 1st 63 sectors on the hard drive. 2) Press the [Esc] key to exit this menu - This option allows users to safely exit the "Wipe the Drive Clean" menu without loss of data. 6. If the "Backup / Restore Track 0" was used, remove the floppy disk containing BAKTRAK.EXE and reboot the system. If the "Wipe the Drive Clean " was used, remove the floppy disk containing BAKTRAK.EXE and reboot the system with a the PC with a system boot diskette. At this point, the hard drive needs prepared with either the Operating system (if the BIOS supports the drive) or the MaxBlast diskette (if the BIOS does not support the drive).
