The MH32BIT.386 Fastdisk Driver enhances Microsoft Windows 3.1 and Microsoft Windows For Workgroups 3.11 hard drive performance. The Micro House Fastdisk Driver is a direct replacement for the built-in Microsoft 32-Bit Disk Access driver WDCTRL. The 32 bit programs can be obtained from the following: · Maxtor's World Wide Web site. Download the WIN32BIT.EXE file. · Maxtor Utilities diskette (MUD), the uncompressed programs are contained in the \EZUTILS\WIN32BIT directory. · MaxBlast version 9.xxM diskette, MaxBlast Plus 1.x Diskette or downloaded as MAXBLAST.EXE from Maxtor's Internet Website. Extracting Files The WIN32BIT.EXE file is a compressed file, and self extracting. Prior to extraction, Maxtor recommends that users copy WIN32BIT.EXE to a blank, DOS (5.0 or higher) or Windows 95/98 formatted 3.5" floppy diskette. · Insert the floppy disk containing WIN32BIT.EXE in the appropriate floppy drive and establish operations at that drive's DOS prompt. · At the command prompt, type "WIN32BIT" and press the [Enter] key. At this point, seven files will be extracted to the floppy disk: 1. MH32BIT.386 - replacement for the built-in Microsoft 32-Bit Disk Access driver WDCTRL 2. MH32BIT.HLP - MH32BIT.386 on-line help guide for the setup program. 3. SETUP.EXE - MH32BIT.386 Windows installation program. 4. SETUP.INF - general setup information file. 5. WIN32BIT.TXT - contains this document. 6. DOSSETUP.EXE - MH32BIT.EXE DOS installation program 7. DOSSETUP.TXT - General setup information for DOSSETUP.EXE Note: After the initial execution of MH32BIT.HLP, an eighth file will appear. This file is named MH32BIT.GID. This file opens the help menu. Technicians Overview: -------------------- The following is a brief synopsis to install the MH32BIT.386 Driver. Ensure that Microsoft Windows is already installed prior to loading this driver. · Apply power to the PC. · Insert floppy diskette containing MH32BIT.386 (and associated installation files) into appropriate floppy disk drive. · If installing MH32BIT.386 from DOS, type DOSSETUP and press the Enter key. If installing MH32BIT.386 from MS Windows, access the Program Manager, select "FILE" and then select the "RUN". If installing from the Maxtor Utilities Diskette, type "{appropriate Floppy Drive letter}:\EZUTILS\WIN32BIT\SETUP" and either click on the "OK" button or press the [Enter] key. If installing from the MaxBlast diskette or from the floppy disk containing the extracted files, type the "{appropriate Floppy Drive letter} SETUP" and either click on the "OK" button or press the [Enter] key. · Press the [Enter] key to copy MH32BIT.386 to the C:\WIDOWS directory. · Enable 32 Bit Disk Access within the 386 Enhanced Section of the Control Panel. · Restart Windows. OVERVIEW COMPLETE Step by Step Procedure: ---------------------- The following is the step by step procedures to install the MH32BIT.386 Fastdisk Driver for Windows and Windows for Workgroups. Installing MH32BIT.386: Note: Microsoft Windows must be installed on the computer prior to performing the Setup utility. Automatic Setup Note: Use the Manual Setup below if WDCTRL is not the 32 bit disk access driver pre-loaded in the system. 1. Boot the computer and start Windows. Note: Some systems hang upon the launching of Windows and will not allow the user to perform the automatic installation process. If this occurs use the DOS Setup procedure below. 2. Insert the floppy diskette (either the MaxBlast/MaxBlast Plus Diskette, the Maxtor Utilities Diskette or the floppy diskette containing the extracted MH32BIT.EXE files) into the appropriate floppy disk drive. 3. From the Windows Program Manager, select "FILE" and then select the "RUN" command. The Run dialog entry box will then appear on the screen. a) If installing from the Maxtor Utilities Diskette, type "{appropriate Floppy Drive letter}:\EZUTILS\WIN32BIT\SETUP" and either click on the "OK" button or press the [Enter] key. b) If installing from the MaxBlast diskette or from the floppy disk containing the extracted files, type the "{appropriate Floppy Drive letter}:SETUP" and either click on the "OK" button or press the [Enter] key. 4. The user will be prompted for their Windows directory path. Press the [Enter] key to copy MH32BIT.386 to the C:\WIDOWS directory. Note: Users will have to manually type in the correct path if C:\WINDOWS is NOT the default Windows directory. At this point, MH32BIT.386 is copied from the floppy diskette to the WINDOWS directory. 5. After MH32BIT.386 is copied, the SYSTEM.INI file must be edited to reflect the changes. This is accomplished as follows: a) Double click on the "Control Panel" icon. b) Double click on the "386 Enhanced" icon. c) Click on the "Virtual Memory" button. d) Click on the "Change" button. e) Click on the "Use 32-bit Access" box. f) Click on the "OK" button to accept the changes. 6. Restart Windows The Windows 32 bit driver is now installed. DOS Setup --------- Note: This procedure is used if Windows hangs. 1. Boot the computer to the DOS command prompt and do not launch Windows. If the command WIN is in the AUTOEXEC.BAT file which automatically launches Windows, perform the following to prevent Windows from loading: a) When the message "Starting MS-DOS" appears on the screen, press the [F8] key. This allows the user to step through the CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT files loading each line individually. b) Type the "Y" key for each line until the line "WIN" appears. c) Type the "N" key when prompted to execute the command "WIN". This will take the user to the C: prompt. 2. Insert the floppy diskette (either the MaxBlast Diskette, the Maxtor Utilities Diskette or the floppy diskette containing the extracted MH32BIT.EXE files) into the appropriate floppy disk drive. Establish communications at the appropriate floppy disk drive's prompt. 3. Type "DOSSETUP" and press the [Enter] key. If C:\WINDOWS is NOT the Windows directory, type "DOSSETUP [destination path]" (where [destination path] is the full path of the Windows 3.X directory) and press the [Enter] key. 4. At this point, MH32BIT.386 is copied from the floppy diskette to the WINDOWS directory. 5. Restart Windows. 6. After MH32BIT.386 is copied, the SYSTEM.INI file must be edited to reflect the changes. This is accomplished as follows: a) Double click on the "Control Panel" icon. b) Double click on the "386 Enhanced" icon. c) Click on the "Virtual Memory" button. d) Click on the "Change" button. e) Click on the "Use 32-bit Access" box. f) Click on the "OK" button to accept the changes. 7. Restart Windows The Windows 32 bit driver is now installed. Manual Setup ------------ Note: This procedure is the recommended installation procedure if WDCTRL is NOT the 32 bit disk access driver pre-loaded in the system. Refer to system manufacture's documentation to verify the filename of the 32 bit disk access driver installed in the computer. 1. Boot the computer to the DOS command prompt and do not launch Windows. If the command WIN is in the AUTOEXEC.BAT file which automatically launches Windows, perform the following to prevent Windows from loading: a) When the message "Starting MS-DOS" appears on the screen, press the [F8] key. This allows the user to step through the CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT files loading each line individually. b) Type the "Y" key for each line until the line "WIN" appears. c) Type the "N" key when prompted to execute the command "WIN". This will take the user to the C: prompt. 2. From the command prompt, type "WIN/D:F" and press the [Enter] key. This will launch Windows with 32 bit disk access disabled. 3. Insert the floppy diskette (either the MaxBlast Diskette, the Maxtor Utilities Diskette or the floppy diskette containing the extracted MH32BIT.EXE files) into the appropriate floppy disk drive. 4. Open the File Manager, 5. Copy the MH32BIT.386 file from the diskette to the Windows directory. Note: Refer to the user's Manual for proper file transfer syntax. 6. Open the SYSTEM.INI file with a text editor (such as the Windows Notepad). 7. Locate the following device line in the [386Enh] section: device=*wdctrl (or other pre-loaded 32 bit disk driver name) 8. At the beginning of this device line, type either: a "semi colon" (;) or "three colons" ( : : : ) or "REM" This will comment out (terminate) the execution of this device line. 9. Insert a blank line in front of or after this line. 10.On the blank line Type "device={appropriate Disk Drive letter}:\windows\MH32BIT.386" Note: {appropriate Disk Drive letter} refers to the drive letter of the hard drive where Windows is installed. 11.Save changes to the SYSTEM.INI file and exit the text editor. 12.Exit Windows. (Steps 12 and 13 are necessary for the new 32 bit driver to be loaded) 13.Start Windows. 14.Double click on the "Control Panel" icon. 15.Double click on the "386 Enhanced" icon. 16.Click on the "Virtual Memory" button. 17.Click on the "Change" button 18.Click on the "Use 32-bit Access" box. 19.Click on the "OK" button to accept the changes. 20.Restart Windows The Windows 32 bit driver is now installed.
