NVRAM and EEPROM

The IDPROM on Sun-3 and Sun-4 CPU boards contains the machine-type code, serial number, and ethernet address.

The machine-type code and serial number are combined to create the hostid. Some companies use the hostid to license software to a specific machine.

The hostid command displays the serial number in hexadecimal. The label on the IDPROM is decimal. The label on the NVRAM is alpha-numeric. The serial number displayed by the Power-On Self Test (POST) is decimal.

Follow the steps in the example below to verify an IDPROM.

The label on a Sun-3/160 IDPROM is 31774.
The serial number displayed by the POST is #1774.
1. Convert 1774 decimal to 006ee hexadecimal.
2. Combine the Sun-3/160 machine-type code 11 with 006ee for a hostid of 11006ee.
3. Use the hostid command to display the hostid of 11006ee.
