AHA-154x Family Common Questions and Answers

General

Q. I disabled the BIOS via the switches and now I can no longer make changes to the adapter.

A. Once the BIOS is disabled via the switches, the <Ctrl> A SCSI Select will no longer function. An alternative for disabling the BIOS and still allowing for the <Ctrl> A to function would be to use the <Ctrl> A to disable the BIOS. This is done in the Advanced Configuration Options menu found under the Configure/View Host adapter Settings menu. Set the option Host adapter BIOS (Configuration Utility Reserves BIOS Space) to DISABLE. This will disable the BIOS but still allow access to SCSI Select using <Ctrl> A.

Q. I have the AHA-1542B with the greater than a gigabyte BIOS and my system doesn't see the hard drive or just hangs there when I run Novell's SERVER program. What is the problem?

A. The greater than a gigabyte BIOS is DOS solution and should not be used with NetWare 386, since greater than a gigabyte support is built in. Remove the jumper at J6, position 2.

Q. How do I correct the "command port full" when installing a AHA-154xC and Novell 2.x?

A. Ensure hard disk drive is at SCSI ID 0 and AHA-1540C. Advanced Features has extended BIOS translation disabled and Dynamic Scan disabled.

Q. Under Install.nlm with the AHA-1542C card there is a message "The Host adapter Appears to be hung..." or "There are no accessible hard drive..."

A. After you reboot your system press <Ctrl> A, select Configure/View Host adapter Settings, then press <F6> to re-load the defaults. (The greater than a gigabyte option was enabled and this will not work under NOVELL).

Q. When running NetWare with drives that are greater than 1 Gigabyte, do I enable the Extended BIOS Option?

A. No. You do not enable that option when running under NetWare for any of our cards. You also need to ensure that on the AHA-154xC and AHA-154xCF the Dynamic Scan of the SCSI Bus is disabled. Press <F6> for default settings in the SCSI Select utility. If greater than 1gigabyte is enabled upon installation, download the latest Netware dirvers from the Netware directory on the BBS.

Q. While installing NetWare 3.11 with a AHA-1540 Host adapter, I load the AHA-1540.DSK. Then I load, install and select disk options. The system "beeps"and console displays a message that says: "Host adapter appears to be hung. Resetting Host adapter."

A. Press <F6> in the SCSI Select utility to reset to defaults, or disable the "Dynamically Scan SCSI Bus" option in the advanced configurations setup.

Q. What do you do when you have AHA-154xC, Novell 3.11 and Toshiba Hard Disk Drive and Novell INSTALL reports "no accessible Disk Drives."

A. Remove "unit attention" jumper from Toshiba, check version of AHA-1540.DSK to ensure it's current. Ensure the AHA-1540C Advanced Features has "Dynamic Scan" option disabled.

Q: I get the message "Checking for SCSI target 0 LUN 0" right after the Adaptec BIOS header message and system waits for a minute and then it boots..

A: BIOS tries to find the hard drive at SCSI id # 0 or 1. If you do not have a hard drive connected to the card, you can disable the BIOS. (Jumper J6)

Q: When the Adaptec BIOS header message comes up It hangs my system.

A: Make sure that your SCSI hard drive (at SCSI ID #0 or 1) has proper termination. (The last device at the end of the SCSI chain has to be terminated.) Check for resource conflicts. BIOS address, port address, interrupt and DMA channel. Make sure in CMOS setup Shadow RAM is not enabled.

Q: How can I low level format my drive.

A: You can use DEBUG to get to the Adaptec lowlevel format utility. At the command line type DEBUG. Then at the - prompt type G:DC00:6 in which DC00 is the BIOS address.

Q: How can I run the diagnostic to check if the DMA transfer is being done properly?

A: You can use DEBUG. At the command line type DEBUG. Then at the - prompt type G:DC00:9 in which DC00 is the BIOS address.

Q: I run the "Host Adapter Diagnostics" and I get the message "Buffer Miscompare" or it just locks up.

A: Change the DMA channel and run the test again. If it does not pass the test on any of the available DMA channel then you may have the card in a none busmastering system. Old 386 and some 486 machines have limitations on busmastering.

Q: I have 2 hard drives (SCSI or IDE) and I am adding another hard drive in the system, the BIOS of the card sees the drive but I can not see the drive under Fdisk.

A: DOS can not see more than two hard drives under the BIOS control. If you attach a third hard drive, you have to load drivers to support that. Install EZSCSI and partition your hard drive with AFDISK.

Q: I am putting a Soundblaster card and a 1540/42B in my system. Am I going to experience conflicts?

A: Soundblaster may use DMA channel 5 and midi address 330 (which are also the defaults for 1540/42B). Also Soundblaster SCSI uses an Adaptec chip which by default is set to the address 340 and IRQ 11. So make sure you change the settings on one or both cards to avoid conflicts.

Q: I get the message "No ROM Basic, system halted".

A: Make sure that you have a partition on the drive that is set to ACTIVE. Use the option "show partition information". If not, set the partition to active.

Q: I get the message "Host adapter not found at port 330" after the adaptec BIOS header message.

A: Make sure the card is set to port address 330 and also look for port address, DMA and interrupt conflict.

Q: How can I disable the floppy on my 1542B card?

A: On jumper block J8, pull out the number one jumper.

AHA-1540/42CF ,AHA-1540/42C

Q: I get the message "BIOS not installed" right after the Adaptec BIOS header message.

A: BIOS installs only if it finds a hard drive at SCSI id # 0 or 1. If you do not have a hard drive connecting to the card, you can disable the BIOS.

Q: I disabled the BIOS via the switches and now I can no longer make changes to the adapter's settings.

A: Once the BIOS is disabled via the switches, the <Ctrl> A SCSI Select will no longer function. The other option is to use DEBUG to get to the BIOS. At the command line type DEBUG. Then at the -- prompt type G:DC00:6 in which DC00 is the BIOS address.

Q: I get the message " Time-out failure during SCSI inquiry command".

A: Change DMA channel. Check for resource conflicts. BIOS address, Port address, Interrupt and DMA channel. Also check the termination and cables

Q: I get the message "BIOS not intended for this host adapter".

A: Address conflict. Change the Port address of the card.

Q: I run the "Host Adapter Diagnostics" and I get the message "Buffer Miscompare" or it just locks up.

A: Change the DMA channel and run the test again. If it does not pass the test on any of the available DMA channel then you may have the card in a none busmastering slot. Old 386 and some 486 machines have limitations on busmastering slots.

Q: I have 2 hard drives (SCSI or IDE) and I am adding another hard drive in the system, the BIOS of the card sees the drive but I can not see the drive under Fdisk.

A: DOS can not see more than two hard drives under the BIOS control. On this card you have the option of enabling support for more than two drives under DOS. This option is in the "SCSI Select" under "Advanced Configuration Options".

Q: I am putting a Soundblaster SCSI and a1540/42CF in a system. Am I going to experience conflicts?

A: Soundblaster SCSI is using an Adaptec chip which by default is set to the address 340 and IRQ 11. Soundblaster also may use DMA channel 5 ( which is used by 1540/42CF). So make sure you change the settings on one or both cards to avoid conflicts.

Q: I get the message "No ROM Basic, system halted".

A: Start the computer with a boot diskette. Run Fdisk and make sure that the partition on the hard drive is set to ACTIVE.(Use Fdisk and the option "show partition information").

Q: How can I disable the floppy on my 1542C/CF/CP card?

A: Switch 5 on the board set to ON (close) will disable the floppy.

AHA-1540/42CP

Q: I have replaced my 154xCF card with the 154xCP (Plug and Play) card and it is not working.

A: First, if you are not in a pure Plug and Play environment ( both Computer system and Operating system that supports PnP) disable PnP by placing switch number 1 to the on position. Also make sure the rest of the switches are identical between the two cards. There have also been a number of changes made to the default settings in SCSISelect on the CP card. Make sure the settings in SCSISelect on the CP card are the same as your CF card.

Q: Can I run the 154xCP card in a non-plug and play system?

A; Yes, you can use the CP in a non-plug and play system by placing switch number 1 to the on position, which disables PnP(Plug and Play) on the CP card. You may also need to go into SCSIselect and change "Host Adapter SCSI Termination" from "Automatic" to the manual setting and in "Advanced Configuration Options" disable "Plug and Play SCAM support".

Q: When I try a new install of SCO UNIX using the 154xCP card I get an F12 error message?

A: Go into SCSIselect by hitting the CTRL-A when prompted during boot, hit enter when it shows the port address and then enter on "Configure View Host Adapter Settings." Select "Advanced Configuration Options" at the bottom of the page and disable "Extended BIOS translation for DOS drives >than 1 Gbyte," and "BIOS Support for More Than 2 Drive" and "Dynamically scan SCSI bus for BIOS Devices"..

Q: I get the error message, "More than two terminators detected", or "Less than two terminators detected" right after the Adaptec BIOS banner and then the system halts.

A: The 154xCP card has detected a problem with termination or cabling on the SCSI bus. Check to make sure the devices on either end of the bus are properly terminated and that devices in between are not terminated. Also make sure all your cables are SCSI II compliant.

Q: When loading the AHA1540.dsk driver in Novell I get the following error message, "Unable to reinitialize the mailbox for DOS!! Unable to reinitialize the mailbox for NetWare!!".

A: First, check for resource conflicts, such as IRQ, DMA or port address. If there are no resource conflicts, then download version 3.23 of the AHA1540.dsk driver from either the Adaptec BBS, our CompuServe forum or from our FTP site.
